Carol Rothwell and Pete Cohen are renowned coaches British life coaches, motivational speakers and authors. With extensive experience in helping people achieve their goals and improve their quality of life, in 2005 they developed a unique approach to promoting happiness and well-being. They created a simple equation for happiness, which became known as the “Happiness Formula”:

Happiness = P = (5xE) = (3xH).

In the equation, the term “P” represents personality attributes, such as optimism. The “E” refers to life circumstances, including health, financial stability, and social life. Finally, “H” corresponds to self-esteem, personal aspirations, and the ability to appreciate humor.

But the equation has not established itself as a significant contribution to the study of the psychology of happiness. This is because the conditions identified by researchers as generating happiness are more related to joy than to happiness itself.

But aren't joy and happiness the same thing? In reality, they are not. If you are very hungry, this uncomfortable physiological state triggers a series of negative reactions in your body, mind and emotions. As a result, reactions such as irritation, lack of concentration, low blood sugar, headaches, among others, begin to occur.

When you eat and satisfy your need for food, your body experiences a sense of physiological satisfaction. This causes your brain to release endorphins, hormones associated with feelings of relaxation and pleasure. When you feel more relaxed and satisfied, you tend to be calmer, more attentive, friendly, and cheerful. However, simply satisfying a physical, emotional, and/or intellectual need is unlikely to result in happiness.
